Joanna & John Jacobs

Joanna teaches: English KS1-KS3 - SATS and 11+; English Language and Literature GCSE; Special Needs and Dyslexia. Maths - KS1-KS3 - SATs and 11+; GCSE to Foundation level

Joanna: I started the business in 2012 as a well-known franchise, Kip McGrath and I decided 2 years later to form Leeds Tuition Centre and have been operating under this name ever since. I first qualified as an English Teacher in 2000 where I completed my English degree at the University of London and then my PGCE in English, Media and Drama at the same University. I left London to live in Norfolk where I undertook my first 3 years as a teacher, teaching in Thetford and Suffolk. I had the good fortune to be mentored by Geoff Barton who is now General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders. He saw something in me right back in the early days of my career but I wasn’t convinced that teaching was for me at that time, so I left the profession and became a Medical Representative working for pharmaceutical giants like Pfizer and Yamanouchi to name a few.

It was in about 2006 that I decided that a return to the classroom, as a supply teacher, might be a good way of earning a living as my love affair with the Pharma industry came to an end. I returned to teaching and what a tough few years they were. First I started at Rodillian High School and then moved to David Lister School in Hull as I was head hunted to run the English department until the school closed in 2011. My beautiful daughter, Arianna was 18 months old at the start of that particular journey and had to adjust to a new nursery and a new city. After 16 months, I hankered after West Yorkshire so I returned to supply teaching whilst I decided what I would do next. It was then that I was introduced to Kip McGrath and my passion for running my own business and seeing children progress and grow as individuals was really borne.

John and I married in February 2020 and he is father to Kirsty and Nicole and a grandfather to Alexis and Alyssa. He joined Leeds Tuition Centre in April 2019. At the time of his joining he was only part time and is now working here full time helping me run the day to day operation (there is a lot to do) of the business and supporting students when sessions are running. John has extensive Trainer experience in industry where he was a trainer for Symphony Kitchens, a driving instructor for Red and more recently he worked at First Bus and had been in line for promotion as a Driving Instructor/trainer had Covid not come along. John’s hobbies are reading, listening and playing music. He has a huge appetite for learning and this has boded well over the last few years where many changes have happened in his life. Joanna: I love to read, when I get the time to do so; I’m a major advocate for reading to ensure children progress as this is the foundation for all learning. I also love to watch political and period dramas and I have a deep passion for travel, meeting new people and experiencing new cultures.

Lesley Whitfield

Lesley Whitfield

Lesley teaches: Maths: (KS1-4) up to GCSE maths, English: (KS1-3) SATs up to Year 9

I joined Leeds Tuition Centre in June 2019 after retiring from full-time teaching. I first qualified in 1991 with a degree in Maths and Education from the University of Birmingham. Since then I have taught in primary schools in Birmingham and Leeds and I was also a consultant with Education Leeds for ten years, working across all key stages.

I have always loved Maths and know how some can struggle to get to grips with how it works. At the tuition centre I have seen “I can’t” change to “I can” which is so motivating for me, and the student.

I enjoy creative activities. When I’m not at the centre I sell bags that I’ve designed and made from recycled materials. To relax I love to get my skates on and join friends at roller dance classes or a little street skating so you may see me on my wheels in Roundhay Park.

Bongani Ndlouv

Bongani Ndlouv

Bongani teaches: Maths: (KS1-4) up to GCSE Science: (KS2-5) up to A level; Biology, Physics and Chemistry at GCSE and Biology and Chemistry at AS & A level

I am a qualified Science teacher who specialises in Physics, and has many years experience as a Science Teacher having taught in Secondary Schools both abroad and in the UK.

At Appleton Academy, which is in Bradford, I worked with GCSE and A level students successfully. I moved to St Wilfrid’s Catholic Science College in Wakefield where I enjoyed teaching Science and working with the School’s football team.

Bishop Young Academy was another Academy I had the opportunity to work at helping students and staff in the Seacroft area of Leeds. I worked in a good Science Team with a reputation of producing the best results in the Academy year after year. With my passion of Science and working with students, I have found that at Leeds Tuition Centre is a place where I interact again with GCSE and A Level students providing tutoring support.

The level of organisation and the resources along with ample time for individual support to students I have found that the centre has been motivational and rewarding to tutors, students and parents alike. I have helped students gain confidence in their subject areas and improve beyond their projected school grades.

My interests are playing volleyball, tennis and football. I also like to jog. I really enjoy watching TV; documentaries, live football and I follow tennis. I enjoy reading – in particular I enjoy Science and Engineering news and magazines.

At the Leeds Tuition Centre you will be assured of tailored support for your child with detailed feedback that provides information on the progress your child makes, you will never go wrong.

Dimitris Georgalis

Dimitris Georgalis

Dimitris teaches: Maths (KS1-5) up to A level maths

“Hi, I am Dimitris, a maths tutor at Leeds Tuition Centre, proud father of two and dedicated educator who is passionate about maths. I have always liked maths, since my school years. That led me to have a degree in Maths and since then I have discovered how fulfilling a career as a teacher is and as such it is now more than a decade since I entered the profession. My studying didn’t stop there though. I continued my studies with a Master’s degree in Education. This has informed my practice where I incorporate reflection of research-based evidence in my teaching practice. I am also a Course Leader for Maths and English in an FE college and am advocate of technology and blended learning approaches, like the ones we use in Leeds Tuition Centre.

I enjoy reading, listening to music, and long walks with my family. My weakness is coffee, which I adore drinking but I vehemently detest sugar.”

I am enthusiastic about my subject and believe that all students can achieve success with support. In my spare time I enjoy reading, baking and visiting historic places.

Sadia Hanif

Sadia Hanif

Sadia teaches: KS1 & KS2

I completed my Primary Education teaching degree from Leeds Beckett University in 2008.Since then, I have taught in schools in Leeds across Key Stages 1 & 2. More recently, I enjoyed working one to one as an NTP tutor helping children to catch-up following the pandemic. The children made accelerated progress in spelling, reading comprehension, and writing as I was able to work at each child’s pace and focus on their specific needs.

I believe it is important to develop children’s growth mindset so they can approach new challenges with confidence. At LTC, this is embedded in the tutoring sessions which place a strong emphasis on encouraging independence and set high expectations of all pupils.

Outside of work, my two young children keep me very busy; we enjoy long walks, playing football and exploring new places. I also enjoy baking and reading whenever I can find the time.

Charandeep Lyal

I completed my PGCE Teacher Training with Leeds Beckett University in 2021. Upon finishing my training, I have gained a range of experience teaching and supporting students from varied year groups including KS1, KS2 and KS3 including those with special needs such as ASD and ADHD. I enjoy developing positive relationships with students in order to give them a can-do mindset and take on challenges in their stride.

As a Teacher, it’s crucial to ensure a positive, productive and resourceful environment to support children’s needs. This is evident at Leeds Tuition Centre where the learning environment is suitable for a variety of students to support and challenge pupils in an effective and measured way.

In my spare time I enjoy nature, travelling and have a passion for fashion!

I trained to become a Maths teacher in 2014 and worked full-time as a Maths teacher in 3 schools until April 2019 teaching at KS3 and KS4. I have a PGCE and Post Graduate Diploma in Education.
Since April 2019, I have mainly focused on online and in-person tutoring, including verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning for 11 Plus exams. This has allowed me to follow my passion for travel. I have been fortunate to volunteer overseas, teaching English in Nepal for six weeks in 2014 and working with local teachers in Uganda in June 2019. Since then, my travels have taken me to New Zealand, South East Asia and South America. I love helping students fulfil their potential and when possible, relate topics to life outside the classroom.
Valerie Wood

Valerie Wood

Valerie teaches: English and Maths from KS1 - GCSE

I grew up in Easton, Pennsylvania, USA, where I first discovered my interest in teaching as a teenager while helping younger students at my karate class. I attended Lafayette College and received a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2019 before relocating to the UK. In 2021, I completed my PGCE at Birmingham City University and qualified as a primary school teacher. After qualifying, I worked as a supply teacher, gaining experience in more than 15 schools across two countries.

I have a particular interest in SEND; during the day, I teach employability skills to disabled adults. Although I am comfortable in front of a traditional classroom, I prefer tutoring because it allows me to work with smaller groups and provide an individualised education that helps students to progress.

In my spare time, I enjoy the outdoors (when the weather allows!) and playing piano and guitar.

Since joining Leeds Tuition Centre 5 years ago we have seen our son growing in confidence.  For example, his reasoning about certain issues is amazing at his age, and his school grades are fantastic.  I recommend any parents/guardians to send their children to Leeds Tuition Centre.
